Laptop battery life starts to diminish quickly. The battery has two phases. The “slow charge” phase is where the battery reduces over time. And the “fast charge” phase where it starts to work as normal. The Question why is my laptop battery draining so fast? is quite common.
The first phase has a lifespan of about 3 years on average. If your battery is new, this will last the whole life of the battery. But the other 3 years will most likely be served by the battery dying.
If you have a spare battery to extend the life of your battery, this will allow you to charge it quickly when you need it. If you have enough extra battery capacity, you can charge it at the same time you charge your laptop.

If you have a laptop with an external battery and you want to extend the life of your laptop’s battery, you need to go to the “slow” or “slow charge” phase. This will allow your battery to be recharged without putting it into the fast charge phase.
However, if you have a laptop with a full battery and you want to use your laptop before it has been fully charged, you need to go to the fast charge phase to charge your battery quickly.
Try putting your laptop into the “slow charge” phase. If your battery has reached its 3-year lifespan, this should be enough to recharge the battery without putting it into the fast charge phase. If not, then it’s time to charge your battery quickly.

If you have an external battery, you may want to check the manufacturer’s recommendations as to the current cycle of the battery.
If you have spare batteries, you can use them in conjunction with your laptop to get the best out of your laptop battery life.
How much does the battery charge before it goes into the fast charge phase?
To calculate the current cycle of the battery you need to know how long your battery has been charged. You can calculate this using the top and bottom graphs below:

The dark purple line is the battery and the light blue line is the charge cycle. The trend lines for the cycles are identical and show the effects of charging slowly. The light green line is the same graph only showing how the charge cycle affects the rate of the decline in battery life.
The green line indicates the rate at which the battery has been decreasing in the last 3 years.
The second graph shows how much battery life would be lost if you charge your battery rapidly.
It looks like the rate at which the battery declines is impacted more by the rate at which you charge the battery than the charge cycle. This means that charging your battery at the fast charge phase will result in much higher battery life.

What is the fast charge phase?
You should get the same rate of charge as you would with a laptop with an internal battery. So the faster the laptop charges, the better.
You can help speed up the rate at which the battery charges by plugging the laptop into the mains when you’ve finished using it. This means that the battery can be charged at the rate at which you charge a laptop. But if you do this too frequently then it’s going to be hard to tell whether your battery is on the “slow” or “fast” charge cycle.
If your laptop charges at a faster rate then the battery will reach the next cycle earlier. This means you should charge your laptop faster. However, this will not increase the amount of time your laptop’s battery can be used. It will just increase the amount of time it stays in the fast charge phase.
What if I want to charge my laptop a bit more?
To speed up the rate at which your laptop charges, you can plug the laptop into the mains after a long period of charge. This means you have to leave your laptop plugged in long before it goes into the fast charge phase.
To increase the amount of charge your laptop gets before it reaches the fast charge phase, you can try to “borrow” the battery from your laptop. This means leaving your laptop plugged into the mains for a longer period of time.
