Hollywood Forever Cemetery
Hollywood Forever is home to a number of one-of-a-kind concert events, as well as summer outdoor film screenings and Cinespia sleepovers with projected films, live music, and activities (past performers include Bon Iver, Lana del Rey, and Karen O, to name just a few). Both the lawn and the Masonic Lodge provide a magnificent setting for concerts, and the bands who play here are always impressive and well-suited to performing for an audience that includes the living and the dead.
Bluewhale
Established in 2009 by jazz singer Joon Lee, Bluewhale is tucked away on the third level of the Weller Court Plaza in Little Tokyo. Before moving over to the performance section, where seats are cubes scattered throughout the space, guests can get some food or a cocktail from the bar area (which has a fantastic assortment of whiskey, scotch, and bourbon).
Harvard & Stone
Harvard & Stone is a cocktail bar that serves both traditional drinks and original creations in a retro, World War II-era setting. The two stories and numerous seating spaces provide plenty of space, however, the stage area can get congested when the pub regularly hosts live performances. There are regular bookings for a burlesque show complete with a live band, as well as rock, blues, country, folk, rockabilly, and indie.
THE MINT
The Mint, one of Los Angeles’ most iconic nightclubs, is a cozy spot with a tremendous reputation for great music. Since 1937, patrons have crammed into the music hall, despite its modest stage, little dance floor, and lengthy, sociable bar and booths. Eat in the back if you like, but if you’re hungry for some live music, come on up front, where you can enjoy the likes of Trombone Shorty, Marcia Ball, and the Rebirth Brass Band, as well as some newer, up-and-coming acts. GREEK THEATRE
The Greek Theatre, a beautiful open-air venue in the heart of Griffith Park, has been a staple of the Southern California music scene since its opening in 1931. The 2015 renovation made the open-air amphitheater suitable for 5,900 spectators. In its season, which spans from spring to fall, the venue makes the most of Los Angeles’s beautiful climate to host a wide variety of musical acts. Lenny Kravitz, Willie Nelson, Idina Menzel, Adele, and many others have all graced the stage at the Greek Theatre. It’s not possible to bring in your own food or drink to the arena as at the Hollywood Bowl, although there are plenty of options for both during the concerts.
