How Success in the Latest Format of the PMP Exam?
Introduction
In August 2021, PMI (Project Management Institute) published the seventh edition of the PMBOK Guide (A Guide to Project Management Body of Knowledge). Although the PMBOK Guide’s 7th edition is the most recent iteration, the PMP (Project Management Professional) exam still uses the PMBOK Guide’s 6th edition and Agile Practice Guide and in PMP boot camps of EDUHUBSPOT, we recommend this only.
After the publication of the Process Groups Practice Guide in October 2022, there is a good chance that PMI will modify the PMP certification test in early 2023 and align it to the seventh edition.
Contrary to popular misconceptions, the PMP certification exam does not entirely rely on the PMBOK Guide. The PMI uses language from the PMBOK Guide and Agile Practice Guide when creating exam questions, and these books are regarded as the primary sources for the test.
There are other factors considered when writing the PMP test as well. Instead, it is based on the Exam Content Outline (ECO), which depicts the PMP exam’s curriculum. The ECO, which was released in January 2021, is the foundation for the current PMP exam. The test has not changed since it was last updated on January 2, 2021.
This post examines the connection between the PMP test, PMBOK Guide, and ECO. Additionally, we offer details regarding the potential 2023 changes to the PMP test.
The most recent edition is the PMBOK Guide 7
The 7th edition of the PMBOK Guide is the most recent version. It becomes available on August 1st, 2021. Earlier, on September 7, 2017, the sixth edition of the PMBOK Guide was made available.
Along with the sixth edition of the PMBOK Guide, PMI also released the Agile Practice Guide on September 7, 2017.
The PMBOK Guide and Agile Practice Guide are regarded as the two main study guides for the PMP exam. When it launched the 7th edition of the PMBOK Guide, PMI also did not produce a revised version of the Agile Practice Guide. The Agile Practice Guide’s 2017 revision is still the most recent one.
The seventh edition of the PMBOK Guide is quite different from the sixth edition, as we will discover in a later section of the essay.
One of the main distinctions is that the seventh edition just briefly discusses Process Groups (PG), whereas the sixth edition spends most of its time discussing PG and processes. In October 2022, PMI released a brand-new Process Group Practice Guide to close the PG gap.
If you have joined PMI, you can get a free PDF copy of all of their publications.
The PMP exam is still aligned with the previous edition because PMI still permits downloads of the PMBOK Guide, sixth edition. The introduction of the Process Groups Practice Guide, however, suggests upcoming modifications to the PMP test.
Changes to PMP Exam in 2023
Early in 2023, there will likely be changes to the PMP exam. Despite not yet making any official announcements on the exam upgrade, PMI has begun the process of retiring the sixth edition of the PMBOK Guide. Beginning in 2023, the 7th edition is most certainly going to take over as the main study guide.
The PMBOK Guide is not the basis for the PMP exam, contrary to popular belief. The PMBOK Guide is used as a primary source of reference material for the credential test, which is not based on any one book in particular.
The Exam Content Outline, which functions as the exam’s syllabus, is the foundation for the PMP exam. ECO’s most recent edition was released in January 2021. PMI updates the ECO every four to five years.
The domains and tasks that are tested in the exam are listed in ECO. Three domains—People, Process, and Business Environment—are listed in the present ECO. The tasks in each domain are varied.
How can I study for the PMP exam?
There are many reference books to read to prepare for the PMP test, according to the PMI’s reference list. The PMBOK Guide is the primary reference among these. As it is somewhat impossible to study all of them, one should at least study the PMBOK Guide to prepare for the exam.
