Turkish doner kebabs have developed from a traditional Middle Eastern dish to a popular fast food sandwich all over the world. Try making homemade doner kabab if there isn’t a kebab business in your area.

Describe Doner Kebab

The Turkish term for meat grilled on a rotisserie or vertical spit is doner kebab (or döner kebap); the caramelised outer layer of the meat is shaved off and eaten over rice or in a flatbread sandwich. While the name kebap generally refers to meat roasted on skewers over a fire, döner indicates to rotate. Doner kebab is known as shawarma in Arabic, while Greek gyros are also made using the same method. In the nineteenth century, this method of cooking originally appeared in the Ottoman Empire (modern-day Turkey), from whence it spread to the rest of the Middle East. In the 1960s, Turkish immigrants brought doner kebab to Berlin, where it was marketed as a sandwich wrapped in pita bread and quickly became one of Germany’s most well-liked street delicacies.

What Kind of Meat Is a Doner Kebab Made Of?

The meat used for doner kebabs is often lamb. Today, veal leg meat, lamb meat, and lamb tail fat are combined in Turkey while cooking beef, chicken, and turkey all follow the same procedure. As it cooks on the rotisserie, the meat’s fatty slices help it to stay juicy and tasty. The flesh is minced and occasionally mixed with ground beef. In Germany, doner kebabs can only include a maximum of 60% ground meat.

The Best Ways to Serve Doner Kebab

Despite being used to describe the Berlin-style sandwich, the name “doner kebab” actually solely refers to the meat. The serving options for roasted, sliced doner meat are numerous:

1. Doner kebab sandwich prepared in the German style, served with a side of french fries, pide (pita bread), shredded lettuce, and garlic, barbecue, or chile sauce.
2. Yufka, a thin Turkish flatbread, is wrapped around the doner meat in the Dürüm doner, a more recent innovation in kebab service.
3. Skender kebap: Also referred to as Bursa kebab, this lamb doner kebab is served with tomato sauce, melted butter, and yoghurt over torn-up pita bread.
4. Doner kebab banh mi: Made with pork and spiced with doner kebab ingredients, this Vietnamese-style baguette sandwich is topped with yoghurt sauce.
5. Kapsalon: This Dutch cuisine consists of fries topped with cheese, salad, garlic sauce, and doner kebab meat.
